Archaeology at Spanish Point
People have lived along the coast from the earliest times. There are burial mounds from the Stone Age or Bronze Age south of the Annagh river and ring forts from the early medieval period further inland.
The search for the San Marcos galleon, a vessel from the Spanish Armada which sank nearby while retreating from England to Spain, is continuing and geophysical surveys have been carried out at Tuama na Spáinneach. Proven anomalies have been found.
